Renameutils" is a software package that simplifies and speeds up file renaming processes by offering a range of useful programs.
If you want a set of programs that make file renaming faster and less cumbersome, then you need the renameutils package. This package includes five programs: qmv, qcp, imv, icp, and deurlname.
Qmv or "quick move" lets you edit file names in a text editor. It does this by writing the names of all files in a directory to a text file. You edit this file and then the program parses and applies the changes you made to the files.
Qcp or "quick cp" works like qmv, but instead of moving files it copies them.
Imv or "interactive move" is a simple, yet useful program. It's perfect for those who are too lazy to type the name of the file to rename twice. It lets you edit a file name in the terminal using the GNU Readline library. Meanwhile, icp is for copying files.
Meanwhile, the deurlname program is useful for removing URL encoded characters from file names (like "%20" representing space). This tool is great if you're using programs like w3m, which tend to keep these characters encoded in saved files.
All file renaming utilities in this package are written in C by Oskar Liljeblad. Plus, they're free software licensed under terms of the GNU General Public License. However, the programs come with no warranty whatsoever. Although the code has been carefully tested, it's still considered beta quality. Thus, the developer can't be responsible for any data loss caused by the file renaming utilities. If you're afraid of this happening, simply run qmv in dummy mode first (see below).
