The s3d project is a remarkable 3D network display server designed to serve as an incredibly immersive 3D desktop environment. There are several reasons why this project came to be, with one of the most influential being boredom. As someone who found themselves blessed with too much time, and with a GPU that remained underutilized on standard desktops, the idea of a 3D desktop was simply too intriguing to ignore.

There are numerous potential benefits to using a 3D desktop, particularly when it comes to GUI design. While it is true that this approach may also introduce the possibility of confusion for some users, the possibilities are many and varied, and adding 3D elements to the desktop has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with our computers.

While there have been other projects like 3dwm that appear to have fallen by the wayside (inaccessible websites make it impossible to say for sure), there are still a few other programs to compare to. Looking Glass from Sun, for instance, seems highly promising, but as of yet, the project remains untested. For this reason, the author's own ignorance and curiosity were additional drivers for this ambitious project.
