A Linux-based software designed to play draughts.
If you're a fan of English draughts or American checkers and want to play them on Linux, Samuel is the game for you. It's an open source program written in Python, PyGTK, and C++. The developer of Samuel was specifically looking for a draughts game for Linux and found that while there are strong programs for Windows, there weren't many for Linux. Some of these Windows programs distributed their engine code as a DLL, which isn't ideal for open source Linux applications.
Fortunately, the developer discovered guicheckers, a draughts program for Windows that comes with source code and a good engine. They decided to convert guicheckers to work under Linux and Samuel is the result. Essentially, Samuel is guicheckers for Linux.
All of the C++ engine code, board graphics, and databases (including the opening book and endgame) come from guicheckers. The developer created a new Python/GTK frontend GUI with an interface that's very similar to guicheckers. Overall, if you're looking for a well-made draughts game for Linux, Samuel is definitely worth considering.
