I recently had the pleasure of trying out SDL Vexed, a puzzle game that is written in Perl-SDL. As far as puzzle games go, Vexed is quite addictive and will keep you coming back for more. The aim of the game is to move similar blocks together, causing them to disappear, and once all the blocks are gone you move on to the next level.
In Vexed, you move the blocks by placing your mouse on them and dragging them either left or right. If an empty space is found, the blocks will fall to the bottom due to the "gravity" feature. The game follows a golf-like scoring system, with each level having a pre-determined number of moves to solve it, also known as "par". If you solve the level in the same number of moves as what is stored in the level pack, you will receive a score of 0 or "par" for that level. Keep in mind that the stored solution may not always be the most efficient, allowing you to beat "par" and achieve a negative score.
The score displayed during gameplay is not limited to individual levels, but is instead a cumulative score for the entire level pack. You can make use of the Solution feature, which enables you to receive assistance and adds five points to your score.
SDL Vexed does require SDL-perl extensions 1.x to function properly. The latest release of the game now includes a feature that allows you to skip the intro.
