The Sphere RPG Engine project is a powerful tool for creating your own role-playing games. This RPG creation engine, or RPGCE, is designed to make it easy to develop games similar in style to Final Fantasy 6 or Phantasy Star. One of the standout features of Sphere is its support for 32-bit graphics with 256 levels of translucency, making it easy to create stunning visuals. In addition, it supports a variety of audio formats, including MP3, Ogg, MOD, S3M, IT, and XM files, as well as WAV and SPX (speex) for sound effects.

One of the strengths of Sphere is that it doesn't impose arbitrary limits on map, tile set, sprite set, or script sizes, giving you the freedom to create games of any size and complexity. The engine also supports three input modes: keyboard, mouse, and joystick, making it easy to develop games that work with a variety of control schemes.

Sphere uses SpiderMonkey, Mozilla's JavaScript implementation, for scripting, which is a powerful, easy, and flexible language. The core Sphere engine can run multiple games after installation, so you don't have to distribute games with the engine, saving both download time and disk space. Additionally, because the engine can run on other operating systems, such as Linux, you can create games that work on multiple platforms.

The Sphere engine is built around maps, which use tilesets to represent different environments. Each tileset includes multiple tiles for different parts of the map, such as sand, water, clouds, and signs. Sphere also supports animated tiles, allowing you to create dynamic environments where torches flicker in a cave or waves lap at the shore. Maps can have unlimited layers, all with parallax and automatic scrolling, giving your game a sense of depth and immersion.

In Sphere, objects are represented as entities, each with its own spriteset. People, for example, can walk in eight directions and have special directions for running or displaying emotions. Unlike many other RPG engines, spritesets in Sphere are variable in size, allowing you to use large animal spritesets just as easily as people. With Sphere, you have the freedom and flexibility to create the RPG game of your dreams.
