TAO is a real-time software implementation that follows CORBA standards, offering reliable and efficient communication between software components.
Version 1.5.8

Platform Linux
Supported Languages English

Developed by Douglas Schmidt
I recently reviewed the TAO project and found it to be an excellent implementation of CORBA that offers a high-quality, real-time solution that meets industry standards. Unlike other implementations of CORBA that are inefficient and non-portable, TAO leverages software practices and patterns to provide efficient, predictable and scalable QoS to distributed end-to-end applications. During my research and collaboration with various groups, I have found that developers often encounter the same core infrastructure challenges regardless of the application domain. These challenges include OS platform portability, connection management and service initialization, event demultiplexing and event handler dispatching, multi-threading and synchronization, fault detection, fault tolerance, and other QoS issues such as latency control, throughput and jitter.

Fortunately, TAO offers a concise set of patterns and framework components that can be systematically applied to eliminate the tedious, error-prone, and non-portable aspects of developing and maintaining distributed applications. The TAO middleware framework is built on top of the ACE object-oriented framework and applies the best software practices and patterns discovered during a decade of intense R&D to automate the delivery of high-performance and real-time QoS to distributed applications.

One of the standout features of TAO is its ability to allow clients to invoke operations on distributed objects without any concern for object location, programming language, OS platform, communication protocols, or interconnects. Developers can enjoy a seamless development experience free from the burden of redundant and time-consuming troubleshooting that would otherwise be necessary to address these concerns.

TAO is a must-have tool for developers seeking a high-quality, real-time implementation of CORBA that is both efficient and scalable. This release includes several bugfixes, and it requires ACE (Development branch), which is a small price to pay for such an indispensable tool.
