Turkix is a live Linux distribution based on Mandrake, offering users a customizable and user-friendly environment.
Turkix Linux distribution is a LiveCD based on Mandrake. Currently, it only supports Turkic languages such as Turkish and Azerbaijani. However, the upcoming release 2.0 will be available in English. The distribution comes with an enhanced version of the rpm packaging system, known as "rpmx". This embedded wrapper of rpm creates a new virtual file hierarchy that's similar to that of Windows and MacOS. The new system will make Windows migrators feel at home while enabling them to get closer to the traditional UNIX file hierarchy.
With the new file hierarchy, everything remains where it should be. But, the automated symbolic links system creates a reorganized shadow copy of your file system. The new structure consists of /all, which contains Libraries, Personal Files, Programs, Temporary Files, and System directories. The Personal Files directory includes Desktop, Downloads, and subfolders for each installed program (e.g., Configuration Files, Documents, Executables, Manuals, Others, and Uninstall).
Turkix also features the most complete and user-friendly control panel, the Turkix Control Panel. It merges KDE Control Center, Mandrake control tools, some external configuration tools, and some additional features. All functionalities are integrated into a single window, Konqueror. The distribution incorporates the "My Computer" functionality of Windows. This provides full access to your file system, hard drives, removable devices (CD-ROM, floppy, etc.), network (nfs, samba), internet connections, printers, configuration wizards, Turkix Control Panel, and many more from one window.
Additionally, Turkix features the Exposë innovation of MacOS X. With just one click, you get thumbnails of all open windows on your screen, then you can select which one(s) to minimize and which one(s) to maximize. Thanks to XFree86 4.4.0 and the latest Linux kernels, Turkix supports a wide range of hardware. Moreover, changing your system's default language is never easier than with Turkix. Through the system tray, you can change the operating system language while running the live Linux mode.
