Developed by Epic Games
Unreal Tournament 3 Server is a dedicated server for GNU/Linux that is aimed towards first-person shooter video game enthusiasts. Developed by Epic Games, this next installment of the Unreal series is to be published by Midway Games in November of 2007 for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Additionally, the game is set to release for Xbox 360 in 2008, and PlayStation 3 in early 2008.

Being the fourth game in the Unreal Tournament series, UT3 is numbered in terms of the engine it runs on. Unlike its predecessors, it runs on the Unreal Engine 3 and takes advantage of graphics capabilities presented in titles such as Gears of War. The game also includes third-party technologies such as PhysX physics cards to provide an advanced gaming experience.

AI bots in UT3 can respond to advanced voice commands that are improved from previous small numbers of voice commands. The bots can also change their behaviors from a command menu. Again like Half-Life 2, simple building blocks are used in creating levels, but artwork is added afterward to focus better on improving gameplay. Additionally, lead designer Steve Polge states that a lot of effort is being placed on AI, which can understand simple voice commands and allow players to have some sort of conversational vibe with it.

Keep in mind that this is still a BETA build and may have bugs. Users should keep crash data from server logs and send it directly to the developer for discussion. This build does not have optimization enabled purposely, but users can expect it to take less for final builds. Most admin guides for the Windows server apply here, so look to them for HOWTOs and documentation, and the mailing lists are also full of good advice.

The installation process itself is simple as users need to download, unpack, and run UT3-linux-server-betademo/Binaries/ut3demo. The server requires its own gamespy profile, so users should not reuse the one they plan to play the game with. Still, users do not need a retail copy of UT3 to host games, but they will need a gamespy login. To install it, users will set the downloaded executable file as executable, and run it like a program; it will unpack itself.
