Vine Linux is a Linux distribution that provides a highly customized Japanese environment. The distribution includes numerous applications that support Kanji-Strings and are pre-configured, allowing them to work seamlessly right after installation. For window management, Vine Linux uses Window Maker, which is customized for Vine Linux, and features menus and dockable applications.
Users can also choose between FreeWnn or Canna as a Kanji input method by using a display manager called wdm. Additionally, GNOME is included for users who prefer the GNOME-based user environment. Vine Linux can even be installed without GNOME support if disk space is limited.
KDE is also available via additional packages available in VinePlus. Most of the basic commands and applications in Vine Linux are localized in Japanese, and you can change the default localization by changing an environment variable.
Vine Linux includes many Japanese documentations to help users, including online manuals, Japanese documentations by the JF Project, Japanese manual pages by the JM Project, and X Japanese Documentation Project. You can use the namazu search engine, included with Vine Linux installations, to easily find required information from the installed documents. Additionally, the tknamazu GUI frontend for namazu starts with a click on the information mark located in the dock of Window Maker.
The X Window System, XFree86-3.3.6, is chosen for its stability and support for new graphic chips, such as NVIDIA GeForce 256/DDR and Intel i810/i815. Vine Linux also includes Japanese fixed fonts (10,12,14,16,20,24 dot), and five DynaFonts that are scalable on X Window.
For printer support, Vine Linux offers vine-printfilters, which supports many printers popular in Japan. The printer configuration is done quickly and easily by using the printtool. Finally, Vine Linux provides packages to build server daemons such as WWW server (Apache), mail server (Postfix), FTP server (ProFTPD), Samba server, OpenSSH server, and many more.
