Xfld

Xfld is a GNU/Linux operating system that serves as a demo for Xfce, derived from Knoppix, that can effortlessly run from your CD. It provides a great alternative OS for commonly used i386-machines that can boot from CD-ROM. The best thing about Xfld is that no software installation is required: all you need is to make sure your computer is enabled to boot from CD in BIOS or boot-sequence. Once you boot your computer and the OS is loaded, you are good to go.

Xfld amazes its users by providing up to two gigabytes of transparently compressed software, which includes essential tools like the Gimp, Firefox, OpenOffice (which is partly compatible with Microsoft Office), Thunderbird, and many more. Xfld has Xfce as its default desktop environment and enables its users to test its extensive and fancy desktop environment with ease.

Xfld not only provides a platform for testing purposes but also for productive work. You can carry your working environment with you simply by bringing along the Xfld-CD (as OS and working environment) and a USB stick (for personal data).
