In terms of the state's business growth rate, Alaska saw a higher rate of growth in 2006, although the pace started to slow down. This trend was notable, particularly in the job market, which is a reflection of businesses in the state. As reported, by the second quarter of 2006, business growth increased by 1.5 percent. However, growth was not as high as that of 2005, a trend that describes most western states. The businesses experiencing the fastest growth include natural resources and retail, where the latter is also popular. The reason for this is because the selling of oil has continued to fuel growth. -with the natural resources industry experiencing the highest growth rate.
In Alaska, the natural resources industry is so large that it made up nearly half of all new jobs created in 2006. Retail also made up a large percentage of jobs which has mainly affected the northern region of Alaska as natural resources attracted growth of about 5.7 percent which is much higher than the national average. However, it is worth noting that the Prudhoe Bay was recently shutdown which could lead to many employees losing their jobs, a possibility that could weaken the revenues of the Alaskan government. Statistics also show that over 25 percent of Alaskans are employed by the state government.
The real estate business continued to grow during 2006, with the value of houses increasing in Alaska. Interestingly, the real estate growth in Alaska surpassed the national average, and this could be attributed to the higher growth rate experienced in the natural resources sector.
