LinWiz is a collection of online wizards that enable you to create complex Linux configuration files and scripts in a simple and web-enabled point-and-click manner. LinWiz://SimpleFirewall was the first wizard launched in March 2003 and it is now replaced by LinWiz://PersonalFirewall and LinWiz://ServerFirewall.

The novice iptables wizard for personal Linux workstations, LinWiz://PersonalFirewall, is perfect for creating a simple iptables configuration for a Linux workstation with a single network card. It is not suitable for routers that do not forward IP traffic or provide IP services to other hosts. This wizard allows you to block common IP exploits and set up your system in a locked-down manner. It exposes no IP services to other systems and does not restrict the internet or other IP services. You can use services such as Web, FTP, Mail, among others. The wizard produces a file that can be read by the iptables-restore utility or a classic rc.firewall shell script.

LinWiz://ServerFirewall is a wizard that creates an intermediate-level iptables configuration for a simple Linux server that hosts popular services such as Apache web server, FTP, SSH, Telnet, and NFS. This wizard is suitable for servers with a single network card that do not act as an IP router. The tool allows you to block common IP attacks and exploits, define which IP services running on your server you are willing to allow access to, set up controlled NFS access, filter the IP or MAC addresses, and log rejected IP packets. The wizard provides all the information for you to set this up, and it produces a file that can be read by the iptables-restore utility or a classic rc.firewall shell script.

In summary, LinWiz is a great software tool that simplifies the creation of Linux configuration files and scripts by enabling you to use simple web-enabled point-and-click methods. The LinWiz://PersonalFirewall and LinWiz://ServerFirewall wizards are excellent for creating simple iptables configurations for workstations and servers, respectively. They both allow you to block common IP exploits and attacks and set up a locked-down system while still allowing access to essential IP services. The files produced by these wizards can be read by the iptables-restore utility or a classic rc.firewall shell script.
