TNV

January 20, 2007
TNV visualizes network traffic through packets and links between local and remote hosts.
Version 0.3.7
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage tnv.sourceforge.net
Developed by John Goodall
TNV is an exceptional software tool that is designed to depict network traffic by visualizing packets and links including the connection between local and remote hosts. This software is particularly helpful for network traffic analysis as it facilitates learning what constitutes 'normal' activity within a network, investigating packet details security events, or network troubleshooting. The unique feature of TNV is that it can open saved pcap formatted files from tcpdump, windump, ethereal, etc. or capture live packets on the wire, and export data in pcap format or save the data to a MySQL database to enable examining trends over time.

The software comprises a main visualization that displays remote hosts along the left side and a reorderable matrix of local hosts on the right, with links drawn between them. The local host matrix shows aggregated packet activity as background color, and shows network packets as triangles, with the point representing the directionality of the packet. Packets and links are color-coded to protocol, and the user can optionally show the flags for TCP packets.

Selecting a cell within the matrix representing a local host for a specific time period, the user can show either the packet details or the port activity related to that host. The primary interaction mechanism for moving through the data is a scrollbar that sets the viewable selection while showing the areas of relative network activity in a bar graph, providing an overview of the entire data set with a more detailed display in the main visualization.

The latest release of this software includes some new and exciting features such as external data tools to perform URL queries or running scripts, improved error handling, and a potential capture dialog fix for Linux. Additionally, a universal binary of the jpcap library is available for Mac PPC and Intel, providing users with an efficient and feature-packed network visualization platform. Overall, TNV is a great tool that provides network professionals with the necessary features for network analysis, and troubleshooting.
