8mm2avi is a Windows software that helps convert Super8 and Regular8 mm film strips into frames and AVI files using standard codecs. A scanner with dia module and a PC with large disk space are required for the operation. The software automates the rest of the process.
Some people may have tried paying a photo studio to convert the films to VHS and have come away unsatisfied with the results. Additionally, sending the film to a Telecine Service can be very costly. With 8mm2avi, this is not a problem.
All you need is a scanner capable of acquiring films, a personal computer with a large disk, and 8mm2avi software, which allows for acquiring the strips, converting them into frames, and producing AVI files using standard codecs. This software also allows for non-linear editing, giving you the ability to process your home movie with a wide range of commercial, shareware, and freeware software to improve the quality, add sound and music, and even produce DVDs or tapes for family amusement around the TV set.
While it can be a time-consuming process, the results are worth it. For instance, one minute of Regular 8mm movie consists of 960 shots that can be acquired by 48 strips in around 45 minutes. Converting the strips will require less than 30 minutes, and sequencing the frames is mainly a batch processing after an initial start-up that will last 15 more minutes. The total time invested is around one and a half hours, 90 times the movie duration. However, this small investment is worth it as the quality is the theoretical best you can obtain, and you have each individual frame saved as its file. Plus, you can do all of this from the comfort of your own home using the scanner for your photos, 35mm, and other film formats.
