Emacs.app is a GNU Emacs Cocoa port designed to work with GNUstep and MacOS X, allowing users to write text, code and automate tasks with ease.
This port is extremely versatile and may also work on other GNUstep platforms, including NetBSD and FreeBSD. However, it may require more effort to run successfully on Windows and Solaris.
It is essential to note that on OS X, 10.1 and 10.2 are not supported because certain APIs that support explicit character layout in text rendering are absent.
Nonetheless, this port differs from "Carbon" ports of GNU Emacs available in the market. It makes a concerted effort from the ground up to follow the OS X desktop and UI conventions. This does not, however, limit what one can already do with Emacs.
Another great feature is that Emacs.app runs smoothly on non-Mac platforms via the free GNUstep implementation of OS X's Cocoa APIs. This makes it incredibly accessible and flexible for users who require this port for non-Mac platforms.
