EXIFutils are command line tools designed to manipulate EXIF data in JPG and TIF images. The software enables users to easily edit various metadata tags, such as camera make and model, date and time, and geolocation information.
One of the key features of EXIFutils is the ability to edit the values of EXIF and IPTC fields across multiple image files. Users can easily copy values between EXIF and IPTC fields or extract data from images in multiple directories, which can be exported in a spreadsheet or database format. Additionally, users can leverage scripting languages such as Perl to automate tasks like renaming image files or generating image catalogues based on EXIF data. Moreover, web servers can extract individual fields from images for use in the generation of dynamic web content.
Other notable features of EXIFutils include the ability to copy EXIF, IPTC, and Flashpix data between TIFF and JPEG files, reinsert EXIF data deleted by photo editing programs, rename image files based on the value of EXIF and IPTC fields, and change the Last Modified time of a JPEG or TIFF file to match the time the photo was taken.
However, there are certain limitations to using EXIFutils. For example, no more than 10 image files can be processed in a single invocation of any EXIFutils command. Similarly, only the first 2 fields in a template will be substituted, while subsequent fields will be replaced with the word "Demo." Other limitations include the ability to specify no more than five (5) field names in a field list or field value list and the display of only the first 50 characters in IPTC field values.
Recent improvements to EXIFutils include improved support for international character sets, read-only support for Encapsulated Postscript (.eps) files, support for Ricoh 'RMETA' custom fields and maker notes, support for Windows XP Tag 0x4747, an increased maximum length of the ip-keyword field, and improved support for IPTC Coded Character Set field (1:90). Additionally, bug fixes have been implemented.
