Intervallogic is an ear-training software that helps musicians improve their aural skills. With exercises focused on recognizing intervals, scales, and chords, users can develop their ability to identify musical components by ear.
The software encourages practice in a high repetition, fast-paced mode, which can be difficult to achieve in a classroom or private instruction setting. Users can work within a given exercise for approximately 5 to 10 minutes maximum in one session. They can return several times a day for more practice.
Once the exercise ends, the scores for each exercise are automatically recorded. They can be reviewed or archived at a later time. The software has basic identification exercises, which generate chords or intervals and present them as multiple choice options. The basic idea is to achieve 100 correct answers within a 5-minute time limit.
Immediate feedback to each response occurs visually with the movement of the progress bars. In the event of an incorrect response, the correct answer is briefly highlighted before the next question is played. While not intended exclusively for use in the Royal Conservatory system, where applicable exercises have levels matching the grade requirements for ear-training of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto).
Intervallogic has several key features, including a multiple user environment. This environment has individually stored preferences and results for each user. The software has basic tools to manipulate the user results files. Users with minimal formal music background knowledge can use it too. Melodic answers are given in standard solfege symbols, and the software has a customizable user interface. There are individual settings for target scores, time allowed, etc.
The software requires users to have QuickTime 6.01 or later, Sonora font installed (included), Rhythms font installed (included), and Lucida grande font installed (part of OSX). There is a limitation of a 15-day trial, and user results are not stored in the trial version.
