This free software is a client-server application designed for remote file monitoring over a network. It allows users to ensure the consistency of their files through remote access.
MD5Guard has an authentication system in place, which uses Acess Control List to verify clients. During a session, the MD5Server sends filenames to clients who will then respond with their MD5 hash. It is possible to configure the list of filenames on a per-client basis.
To ensure maximum security, MD5Guard has an automatic alert system that identifies abnormal behavior like a failed connection, a client that wasn't connected during the expected time, or an attempt by a client to connect twice at the same time. The syslogd logs all anomalies, enabling the administrator to redirect emails or run some program to repair inconsistencies in automatic mode, and report the results.
The easy configuration of MD5Guard makes it stand out as an uncomplicated application; the client's configuration consists of one line in cron.conf. The name of MD5Server and port number are optional (in real environment, the server's name is required if it is different from 'localhost').
