m.o.t.e.s is a Minute Object Twisted Environment Simulation software designed for simulating twisted environments in a minute. It provides a detailed simulation of the environment that users can explore and experiment with.
With m.o.t.e.s., you can kill some time and watch mesmerizing patterns emerge. But it's not just a toy – m.o.t.e.s. is actually based on the mathematical concept of "cellular automaton," so you could argue that you're studying emergent behavior rather than just wasting time. And if you get bored with one pattern, you can twist the frame and see what new interactions emerge.
The possibilities with m.o.t.e.s. are endless. Will plants grow and consume all the water? Will fire burn down the plants? Will water erode away the soil? Will the oil spill catch on fire? Will toxins spread viruses throughout the universe? With m.o.t.e.s., you're the one in control.
Here are just a few of the key features of m.o.t.e.s.:
- Wall blocks everything.
- Water falls and flows, and can put out fires, dissolve salt, and erode soil.
- Clouds produce water.
- Fire rises, but quickly burns out, and burns plants, oil, and viruses.
- Magma produces fire.
- Plants consume water and grow.
- Seeds start plants when in contact with water.
- Salt falls and piles up, and slowly settles in oil, kill viruses and sometimes soak up water (though is usually dissolved by it).
- Shakers produce salt.
- Oil falls and flows, and floats on water.
- Spills produce oil.
- Sand falls and piles up, but otherwise just takes up space.
- Soil, when eroded by water, creates sand.
- Virus grow by the rules of "Life" in air and water, and can also infect plants.
- Toxins create viruses.
To use m.o.t.e.s., you'll need a Mac with CoreImage support. And if you're using the unregistered version, keep in mind that it will only run for five minutes at a time and you won't be able to save your creations.
