Open Tuning enables virtual tunings for all MIDI or MIDI-enabled instruments.
One of the key features of Open Tuning is that it uses the built-in Mac OS X Audio-Unit DLS Soft-Synth, which can be chosen and played from within the software through a user-friendly interface. The software also comes with tuning preset files which can be controlled by program change. Additionally, the real-time processing is made possible thanks to Apple's CoreMIDI technology.
Users have the ability to freely configure and play up to four instances of Open Tuning simultaneously. The software adds four internal MIDI ports (2Inx2Out) per instance for rewire with soft-synths as plug-ins or standalone applications. If users want, they can create their own tuning presets also. The software even has a snapshot feature to store and recall a tuning preset, making it easier to switch between tunings.
The software has a help tags feature available over each user interface element, to make it easier for users to understand what they’re doing. To use Open Tuning, users need a MIDI USB or MIDI FireWire interface, with a free USB or FireWire port to connect the MIDI interface. An audio output is also required for playing the internal Apple DLS Music Device (QuickTime Synthesizer).
Although users can try Open Tuning out with no feature restriction except that a short random MIDI sequence is played every minute, they need to pay for the full version of the software to enjoy all its features.
