Remote Display Server is a software that allows networked Macs and Windows PCs to extend and mirror their desktops. It enables remote control and conferencing for meetings and presentations.
RDS enables you to share one or more displays of the computer on which it runs with other networked computers that use RDC. The RDC computer, in turn, uses the shared displays of RDS computers to display its desktop by sending display information over the network. This feature lets you either duplicate local displays (mirroring) or extend your desktop onto the shared displays (extending).
There are several possible use cases for RDS/RDC. For instance, if you have an older notebook or computer with an integrated display that is otherwise unused, RDS/RDC can extend your desktop and make use of the older machine, thereby boosting your productivity. Similarly, if you're visiting another workplace with a computer available for use, but your data and programs are on your notebook, RDS/RDC lets you temporarily use the workplace's computer display.
RDS/RDC is also a valuable tool for technology professionals such as software developers, website designers/developers, or graphics designers who need as much desktop space as possible. Finally, if you want a larger desktop, but your current computer cannot connect any more displays, RDS/RDC can help you extend your desktop using networked computers effectively.
To run Remote Display, your Apple Macintosh must have a PowerPC G3 233MHz or better, or Intel Core Solo 1.5GHz or better processor. You must also have Mac OS X 10.4.8 or a later version, a minimum of 256MB RAM, and video cards that support the 3840 x 2400 display resolution. The supported display depths are 8 bits per pixel (256 colors), 15 or 16 bits per pixel (thousands of colors or high color), and 32 bits per pixel (millions of colors or true color).
Overall, Remote Display is an extremely useful software package that can help you make the most of your desktop space by enabling desktop extension and mirroring across networked Macs and Windows PCs.
