The software monitors the orientation data from the Sudden Motion Sensor and automatically rotates the screen.
When launching SMSRotateD, users need to press the "Start" button within the application's window to allow SMS-based screen orientation. The notebook's base needs to be parallel to the ground at this point to establish a "level" state. After pressing "Start," the button transforms into the "Stop" button. To disable SMS-based screen orientation, users need to switch to the "Stop" state by clicking "Stop" or hitting the key, which restores the screen to its original non-rotated state.
SMSRotateD also includes a key that toggles between the two button states for convenience and safety. It's necessary to note that if an axis flipping checkbox is required, users will need to verify one or both for certain notebooks. For instance, if rotating the notebook 90 degrees clockwise causes the screen to rotate anti-clockwise, users may rectify the behavior by checking the "Flip x-axis" box.
Despite the screen's rotation, the user-facing orientation of the built-in trackpad remains unaltered. This means that even after rotating the screen by 90 degrees, for example, the trackpad remained in its original position. SMSRotateD also resets the screen to its original state when the application is quit. To observe SMSRotateD in action, users can view a 6.5 MB QuickTime movie in the absence of audio.
