A Mac-compatible space action game that is both free and open source.
The game content is driven through a set of user-editable Ruby scripts, which interact with the Objective-C core engine. The game uses MacRuby to embed a fully featured Ruby runtime. All resources are user replaceable and editable. For 3D assets, the game supports rudimentary COLLADA import.
Planets are rendered in real-time, using atmospheric scattering to create a realistic and pretty view both from nearby, within a planet's atmosphere, and far away. CoreAnimation overlays Cocoa widgets over the OpenGL map and will eventually be used to animate the GUI.
When it comes to controls, players have a range of options at their disposal. W S allows them to accelerate forward/backwards, Arrow Keys accelerate up/down/left/right, and A D allows players to bank. Mouse controls are available for both pitch and yaw, with Capslock disabling them. M pops up the game map, Tab selects a target, H toggles HUD, and V toggles collision volume visualization.
It's important to note that SpaceProto is licensed and distributed under the terms of the BSD License. To sum up, if you're looking for a space game that is fully customizable and has an excellent chance of becoming a 3D space adventure, SpaceProto is definitely worth checking out.
