SpongePACS is a software that serves as an archive for DICOM and other types of images. It is developed as a FileMaker solution and provides a platform for safely storing and retrieving images.
With SpongePACS, the need for storage rooms or manual management of CDs is removed entirely. Instead, this software provides a FileMaker based, database solution that allows for the easy import and storage of digital images in a logical manner within a Digital Archive. Other image types, including jpg, png, tif, bmp, pdf, mpg, and mov files, can also be imported into the system, allowing for the storing of digital camera photos, scanned images, and other images that are relevant to the patient.
Security is a major concern for US users, particularly with regards to HIPAA compliance. SpongePACS has been designed with this in mind, utilizing a password-protected user database with an audit trail to ensure that all interactions are logged appropriately.
On the Mac, SpongePACS utilizes Osirix as the viewer for DICOM images, while on the PC, DicomWorks is the viewer of choice. For other graphic formats, SpongePACS visualizes with the default application for each type.
It's important to note that users will be prompted for a username and password to enter SpongePACS. The default login credentials are "admin" for both the username and password; however, new accounts can be created after logging in for the first time.
The only limitation of this software is that it comes with a 30-day demo period. However, considering its ease of use, comprehensive features, and HIPAA compliance, SpongePACS is a great solution for any medical office that needs to manage digital images and DICOM CDs.
