Acarsdclient is a software application designed to operate as a client of the acarsd server. It allows users to connect to the server and receive ACARS data.
One of the best features of acarsdclient is that it displays a thumbnail of the contact (if available on the server) for every ACARS data received. This allows you to quickly identify the aircrafts you're interested in. Moreover, you can see the location of the aircrafts on a map, and even create your own customized map should you want to.
Installing acarsdclient is straightforward. After downloading the archive, you need to unzip it or use the terminal command tar -xzf archivename for Linux users. When you've extracted the files, you're good to go. You can choose between a fast or user-defined installation, with the fast option using default settings for your system. However, you can always adjust the settings later using the setup/config utility.
Before installing acarsdclient, ensure that you have libpthread and Tcl8.4, Tk 8.4, and libjpeg installed on your LINUX PC or Microsoft Windows machine. You also need a working internet connection, and should allow connections from your host to outside port 2202 in your firewall. Acarsdclient was tested under Linux Kernels 2.4.18 / 2.4.19 / 2.4.20 / 2.4.26, TCL 8.4.1, TK 8.4.1 Linux PPC, and TCL 8.0, TK 8.0.
The latest release of acarsdclient comes with some exciting new features that make it stand out. It includes fast acarsd.db indexing with low memory usage for web and acarsd servers, flight resolution from Flytecomm.com, a high-speed translation table, a new XML parser and creator, and an automatic fleet list upload. The software now supports up to four soundcards and eight airband scanners. Additionally, older records are deleted automatically, while the Nick Birell Aircraft list and translation.csv are downloaded and installed every week. Finally, the WACARS style message extension file "MESSAGE.WDF" is now supported.
In summary, acarsdclient is a great X client that provides users access to live ACARS data from around the world. It's easy to install, and with its new features, it's a powerful tool for aviation enthusiasts.
