Ark Linux is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution that caters to user needs with its specialized features.
The most recent release of Ark Linux is version 2008.1, which has been designed to be easy to use and learn. The Ark Linux team has made some important changes to the software, including updates to KDE 3.5.9, kernel 2.6.25.3, glibc 2.8, and wine 1.0-rc1. They have also rebuilt everything with gcc 4.3 to improve performance, and have significantly extended the hardware support offered by the software. Additionally, they have added gnash, a free player for Flash animations.
Despite original plans for this release involving migrating to KDE 4.x, the Ark Linux team have instead released a stable version based on KDE 3.x. They feel this will provide an updated state-of-the-art system that fixes all problems with earlier versions. As a next step, they will be putting KDE 4.1 prerelease packages into the tree and building a new alpha version as soon as it is available. With so many developers on board, the Ark Linux team expects this to happen relatively quickly.
