A software tool called fiDefrag is designed for defragmenting disks without being dependent on any specific file system.
The fiDefrag tool can be run on any Unix system that meets its dependencies. Initially, it was designed to minimize file fragmentation on JFS filesystems but it can be utilized on ANY Unix-like system with a filesystem that fulfills its dependencies. JFS filesystems underwent stringent testing and proved to work better with them; however, ext2, ext3 and even ReiserFS can be used with the program.
To use fiDefrag, users must have root privileges. It can be executed via the command: python fiDefrag.py -h | -a
