Homeworld SDL is a Linux-oriented adaptation of Relic's Homeworld code.
To use the Homeworld SDL project, users must have a copy of the original Homeworld game for Windows, patched to version 1.05. Additionally, their system must meet certain hardware and software requirements, including a 233 MHz Pentium II or better x86-based CPU, an OpenGL-compatible 3D accelerator card, glibc 2.2 or later for the binary version, and GCC 3.3 or later and SDL 1.2 or later for compiling from the source code.
The latest release of the Homeworld SDL project brings several improvements and bug fixes. Users can now play Homeworld SDL on Windows, and the project now features converted Bink .avi movie playback. Some issues with NIS sequences being cut off have been fixed, as well as the problem of menu buttons missing text after a resolution change. Additionally, the mouse cursor now aligns with the movement disc when using resolutions with a widescreen aspect ratio, and users will find that more multiplayer settings are remembered when saving user preferences.
Overall, while the Homeworld SDL project may not yet offer the complete set of functionalities found in the Windows version, it is a promising option for Linux users looking to enjoy a classic space strategy game.
