imsniff is a tool that captures and analyzes instant messaging traffic through packet capture (pcap) technology.
With IMSniff, configuration options are plentiful. Users can configure it using either command line parameters or a configuration file called imsniff.conf. This file can be located in the current directory or in /etc. In order to ensure proper functionality, if the IMSniff executable is renamed, the config file must be renamed as well.
IMSniff comes with a sample config file - imsniff.conf.sample - which showcases the different options for customization. The only required parameter is the name of the interface that will be listened to.
The latest release of IMSniff brings several new features. It allows for configuration via a configuration file, supports non-ethernet interfaces, captures profile information and both initial and new email notifications. Overall, IMSniff is an exceptional tool for monitoring and analyzing instant messaging activity within your network.
