Meld is a diff and merge software that runs on GNOME 2. It provides an efficient way to compare and combine files and directories to identify their differences and similarities with each other.
The diff viewer is especially impressive as it lets you edit files and update diffs dynamically. The middle column shows detailed changes and even allows merges in real-time. The margins display the location of changes for simple navigation, and the tabbed interface makes it easy to open multiple diffs at once.
If you're keen to know more about Meld, the screenshots page has detailed features that are sure to impress.
When it comes to installation, you'll need to install the gnome-python modules first. If your platform does not supply these packages, you can install them from source. Please ensure that you have gnome2 and python2.2 development packages installed.
Simply download and install pyorbit pygtk gnome-python from your favourite gnome mirror. Remember to build and install them to the same $prefix and in that particular order - this is a gnome-python limitation. Keep an eye out for messages while running configure like 'libfoo-2.0.pc not found' as you may need additional gnome development packages to build correctly.
Meld uses intltool to generate translations, so install it if you want translations. But if you just want to run meld in English, you may skip this step.
To install, untar meld.tgz and in the meld directory, run make to build translations (optional), followed by ./meld. Overall, Meld is an impressive tool that's easy to install and use, and it's sure to make coding much more efficient.
