Mounttero automates the mounting of drives with the use of autofs. It is a reliable software tool ideal for automating the tedious task of manual drive mounting.
Using Mountero is extremely simple, as it automatically detects the device and mounts it accordingly. An example of this can be seen when users open directory /mnt/auto/usb/, the digital camera is automatically mounted, and all the pictures show up in the directory. After four seconds of inactivity, the device is unmounted and can be safely detached.
If anyone wants, they can manually configure Mounttero on their devices. If the software is installed using an rpm, it will configure itself automatically, and no manual setup is required. However, if required, users can configure Mounttero following the steps below.
First things first, create the directories used by Mounttero automounter. The directory needs to be the same one mentioned in /etc/auto.master. Once created, users can create auto.master to tell autofs daemon that the /mnt/auto/autofs directory will be handled according to Mounttero. The timeout is set at four seconds.
The next step involves listing the actual mount points and devices in the automounter map. This step is critical for Mounttero to function correctly. Users need to mention the mountpoint key options location_device, and then Mounterto automatically mounts them when accessed. Symlinks can also be created for easy access.
Once the configuration is done, Mounttero automatically detects and mounts devices when accessed. To test if Mounttero is working correctly, users can insert a CDROM and check /mnt/auto/autofs/cdrom for contents. The CDROM is automatically mounted, and the contents are displayed through the ls command.
The software also automatically unmounts devices when not used for four seconds, and users can detach the device without any issues. By following the steps mentioned above, Mounttero makes it easy for users to access various storage devices without any hassle.
