SvxLink is a voice services system designed for ham radio use. Its aim is to create a flexible, adaptable system that can provide a range of services to users.
The voice services of SvxLink are stored as plugins called modules, and there are a variety of existing voice services to choose from. These voice services are: Help, Parrot, EchoLink, and TclVoiceMail. Help provides a help system, Parrot is a module that plays back everything you say, EchoLink is great for connecting to other EchoLink stations, and TclVoiceMail offers a simple voice mail system.
Additionally, SvxLink includes the EchoLink client GUI application called Qtel. EchoLink was created solely for amateur radio usage, and is a modified version of IP telephony that connects radio transceivers over the Internet. However, it is crucial to possess an amateur radio license to use it. The original EchoLink software supports only the Windows operating system and is closed source.
On the other hand, SvxLink is a free software and operates under the GPL license. Qtel is purely an EchoLink client program and lacks the sysop mode, which means it cannot be connected to a tranceiver and function as a link. However, for the latter function, the svxlink server is the optimal choice.
