WOMP! is a multimedia-focused micro Linux distribution.
WOMP! can also be installed on the hard drive and run in memory just like a bootable CD. Alternatively, it can be run from a read-only loopback file, which is particularly useful for machines with low memory. It can be booted via a floppy bootdisk or a bootable CD, taking up only 1.5MB on the CD and leaving all remaining space for multimedia files.
The software uses the FrameBuffer for playing videos and X for interacting with the user. Hardware acceleration is provided by vidix, with support for nearly all ATI and Matrox cards as well as NVidia in the latest release. Even without acceleration, WOMP! can handle playing divx files in fullscreen as long as the processor is sufficiently recent.
Key features of WOMP! include the ability to play DVD with options for selecting title, angle, language, and subtitles. It can also play Video CD, Audio CD, and a wide range of video files. Supported video formats and codecs include Avi, Mov, Matroska, Ogm for containers, DivX5, XviD, and many others. Subtitles are also supported including text subtitles rendered with fixed or scalable truetype fonts, subtitles from Matroska and Ogm, external text subtitles, and Vobsub subtitles.
Other features of WOMP! include the ability to play audio files (mp3, ogg, etc.), view pictures (jpeg, png, tiff, gif, etc.), playlist management for video, audio, and pictures, media file scanning on CDs and local partitions, and internationalization with support for English, French, Czech, Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese. The software also supports network configuration by DHCP or manual setup, PPP internet connection, web browsing with either w3m (text-based browser) or Mozilla Firebird, and the mounting of remote shares via NFS or SMB (Windows shares).
In terms of hardware support, WOMP! can handle USB-storage devices (USB keys/pen cameras/zip), most sound cards using either Alsa or OSS, mouse devices such as USB, PS2, and serial, and PCMCIA networking and modem cards. It can also support most PCI network adapters.
Users have many installation options with WOMP!. They can run the software in memory from a bootable CD or from a hard drive or other support. It is also possible to run it within a read-only loopback file for low memory machines.
The latest update to WOMP! is minor, adding Russian and Portuguese translations. Users can update from womp-0.6-beta2 by replacing the wompmem.bz2 file with the one included in this release. For those updating from womp-0.6-beta2-devel, they can unpack (tar xjf) the update0.6beta3.tar.bz2 file in the rootbase. There are plans to add the loopback file feature in the future.
Overall, WOMP! is an excellent lightweight multimedia software option that offers a wide range of features and installation options for users.
