YAWICA is a wavelet-based image compression algorithm developed as a result of a diploma thesis.
Designed for photo-realistic images, YAWICA may not perform as well on bilevel images. However, it provides excellent results when compared to its counterparts, SPIHT and EBCOT. The following table shows PSNR-values in dB for different images transformed with the 9/7-wavelet with 0.5 bpp:
- Lena.pgm 512x512: 37.25 dB (SPIHT), 37.32 dB (EBCOT), 37.68 dB (YAWICA)
- Barbara.pgm 512x512: 31.40 dB (SPIHT), 32.31 dB (EBCOT), 32.25 dB (YAWICA)
- Goldhill.pgm 512x512: 33.13 dB (SPIHT), 33.24 dB (EBCOT), 33.49 dB (YAWICA)
- Mandrill.pgm 512x512: 25.65 dB (SPIHT), 25.58 dB (EBCOT), 25.82 dB (YAWICA)
- Bike.pgm 2048x2560: 33.01 dB (SPIHT), 33.55 dB (EBCOT), 33.66 dB (YAWICA)
- Cafe.pgm 2048x2560: 26.49 dB (SPIHT), 26.84 dB (EBCOT), 27.24 dB (YAWICA)
- Woman.pgm 2048x2560: 33.59 dB (SPIHT), 33.65 dB (EBCOT), 33.95 dB (YAWICA)
Overall, YAWICA is an excellent choice for those seeking to compress photo-realistic images, and its results are quite impressive when compared to its competitors. However, it's important to note that this software is not intended for commercial applications.
