ZEmacs enhances GNU Emacs with lisp extensions for a powerful and user-friendly interface.
Version 3.0, the first public release of the Z!MACS project, was thoroughly tested on various Unix systems as well as Mac OS X with its native window system. With version 4.0, many bugs have been fixed and significant upgrades have been made. For XEmacs users, a twin project - the ZX!MACS project - is also available.
The project integrates new and modified LISP packages to create an interface that is more in line with other editors on Mac OS X and Windows while still providing more powerful features. Some of the new features include contextual toolbars, a more efficient search/replace system, superior backup mechanisms, and closer integration between Emacs and Aspell.
TEX users can benefit from the bundle's innovative interface based on the AuCT!X package. Although the plan was originally to enhance this package slightly, the final result bears very little resemblance to the original interface. The new system is highly customizable and can be adapted to suit the user's preferences via the variables of the AuCT!X group.
In addition to new features, the bundle also improves on pre-existing packages. The undo/redo mechanism has been enhanced, incompatibilities with GNU Emacs have been removed, and the cut/copy/paste system now resembles that of Mac/PC. A recent files menu has also been added with an array of new features.
The CDLAT!X package has been modified to make typesetting easier by creating parentheses in pairs, and the XDVI-S!ARCH package provides inverse research for DVI files. With its user-friendly interface and powerful features, the ZEmacs package is a game-changer for those looking to improve upon GNU Emacs.
