Assault Wing is a multiplayer action game with fast-paced gameplay.
While Assault Wing for Linux is still under heavy construction, it's worth noting that this version is a remake of the developers' DOS game with the same name. However, the Linux version of the game is expected to have many new features that will set it apart from its predecessor.
The idea of multiplayer cave flying games has been around for a while. Turboraketti is an example of an ancestor in this genre, and players can also find similar games like Caverns of Eriban and Thrust on Commodore 64. For a modern Unix cave flyer, one can mention XPilot.
Assault Wing, however, was inspired by Auts, a classic cave flyer that runs on DOS. The developers saw several oddities in the game that they believed they could fix in their own project. After several months of development, Assault Wing had a simple screen where two players could control different colored pixels (ships) and shoot each other.
The Linux version of ASSAULT WING aims to be at least as good as the DOS version, if not better. To run the game on your machine, you'll need to meet a few requirements, including SDL, SDL_image, SDL_ttf, SDL_net, and gtkmm 1.2.
Once you've met these requirements, you can easily install Assault Wing by unpacking the packages (awing-x.y.tar.gz and awing-data-x.y.tar.gz) and running the necessary commands. The game is compiled and ready to play!
