Autocutsel is a software that acts as a buffer for storing text from any application. It is easy to use and provides a simple solution for text storage.
In recent times, popular desktop applications such as GNOME and KDE use both the PRIMARY and the CLIPBOARD selections. The PRIMARY selection is used when a user selects text with the mouse, and the usual paste mechanism uses the middle button. Conversely, the CLIPBOARD selection is used when an individual copies text by using, for instance, the Edit/Copy menu. Additionally, users can paste content using the Edit/Paste menu.
However, Windows VNC clients maintain the Windows clipboard synchronized with the cutbuffer but not with the selections. Since recent applications do not use the cutbuffer, the server's CLIPBOARD is left unsynchronized with Windows' clipboard. This issue is where Autocutsel comes in handy. It tracks the changes in the server's cutbuffer and CLIPBOARD selection. When the CLIPBOARD is changed, it updates the cutbuffer. Similarly, when the cutbuffer is changed, it owns the CLIPBOARD selection, thus keeping all the clipboards in sync.
Installation and usage are quite simple. Users need to run the ./configure make command. If users downloaded Autocutsel from CVS, they must first run ./autogen.sh to build the configure script. If configure fails, users must install the devel packages of these libraries to resolve the problem. The installation process requires users to run the make install command as root. Once the installation is done, users could easily run Autocutsel by typing 'autocutsel' into the terminal.
By default, Autocutsel synchronizes the CLIPBOARD selection. Still, users who use Motif or other toolkits that do not use the CLIPBOARD may want to use the PRIMARY selection instead. To use the PRIMARY selection, users may run the 'autocutsel -selection PRIMARY' command.
The latest version of Autocutsel has fixed several issues. For instance, a bug that affected the 64-bit system has now been fixed, and a workaround for OpenOffice.org writer has also been implemented. Additionally, a compilation problem on NetBSD has been resolved. Moreover, a test suite has also been added.
Overall, Autocutsel is a useful software project that helps to synchronize different clipboards, making it an essential tool for those who use a Windows VNC client. The software is easy to install and use and has fixed several issues in its recent release, making the application even more useful.
