Babel-ircd is a compact IRC server developed for small groups to facilitate communication in small communities.
The new command /encoding enables users to set the encoding of the client to ISO 8859-1, which then converts all the messages from and to this client to the right encoding. In this way, several clients can have different encodings and see their accents. Additionally, all encoding provided by iconv is available, and the command /encoding list returns the list of supported encodings while /encoding shows the current encoding.
The recent release has been tested with several popular IRC clients such as xchat, gaim, ChatZilla, Zircon, KSirc, LostIrc, ircII, BitchX, tirc, epic4, and TinyIRC. In conclusion, Babel-ircd is a useful software for small communities where the users require automatic encoding translation. However, it still lacks some features compared to other IRC servers.
