The Bitterbpp software enables Linux users to create DVD backups in the Matroska format.
Bitterbpp is a lightweight GUI wrapper to MPlayer, lsdvd, and several other related software. Written in Perl, it utilizes the Gtk+ 2.x Perl bindings. It is important to note that Bitterbpp has several non-portable methods and system calls specifically designed for Linux-compatible systems. Therefore, it is not advisable to use it in any untested environment such as Mac OS X, Windows, etc.
Some notable features of Bitterbpp include the ability to recompress any selected movie track in two passes or 'n' passes using one of four configurable codecs to suit users' space and scaling preferences. Scaling calculations are based on bits per pixel calculations, which explains the software's name, bitterbpp. With unlimited audio tracks in original AC3 or DTS or recompressed to Ogg Vorbis, and unlimited subtitle tracks with proper language support, Bitterbpp ensures users get the most out of their backups.
In its latest release, Bitterbpp-refresh has been separated from Bitterbpp, and there have been revisions to the program's structure. Additionally, documentation has been updated to reflect these changes.
