GNOME is a worldwide initiative to create a comprehensive desktop environment, that is entirely free of charge. This goal encompassed the development of software development frameworks, the selection of application software for the desktop, and working on the programs that manage application launching, file handling, and window and task management.
The GNOME desktop environment can be used with various Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and also as part of the Java Desktop System in Solaris. This project is a part of the GNU Project.
Initially, the name of the project stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment, however, this acronym is now considered to be deprecated. The GNOME developers put a heavy emphasis on simplicity, usability, and making things work effortlessly to provide a satisfactory user experience.
