GNOME is an international effort to create a complete desktop environment entirely from free software. The primary goal of GNOME is to create software development frameworks, select application software for the desktop, and work on the programs that manage application launching, file handling, and window and task management. GNOME is a part of the GNU Project and can be used with various Unix-like operating systems such as Linux, and it can also be used as part of Java Desktop System in Solaris.
Initially, GNOME was an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment, although this acronym is now deprecated. The GNOME project emphasizes simplicity, usability, and the importance of making things work seamlessly.
