Deadly Cobra is an SDL game that brings back the nostalgia of the classic snake game or nibbles game. Play as a cobra and slither around to eat food and grow longer, all while avoiding obstacles and enemies that can cut your game short.
Some of the main features of Deadly Cobra include 2 Single player modes: Adventure & Longest Snake, as well as 2 Head to Head multiplayer modes: Standard & Instant Respawn. The program has a simple design, which keeps it small in size. It has 4 targets with individual movement patterns and 9 difficulty increments. It also comes with 3 different levels, each with its own music and sound effects. High score save is also a part of the game.
The controls for Deadly Cobra are easy to remember. Arrows move snake 1 and ASDF move snake 2. Escape is used to end the game, while F12 takes a screen shot. "M" toggles the sound and "P" pauses the game, while "r" resumes it.
The points system is also well thought out. Fat Men = 4, Random Confused Men = 3, and Skinny Men = 2. Sentry Targets are worth 1 point. In Adventure Mode 1P, 50 points are needed to advance to the next level. The player has 3 lives per game, +1 for every 3 levels completed (max 9 lives). Difficulty levels affect speed, obstacles, quantity of men & length of snake. Beating Adventure Mode is possible.
In Longest Snake Mode 1P, only sentries appear. The player has 1 life per game, and difficulty levels only affect speed. In H2H Delayed Respawn 2P, two players can play the game simultaneously. When a player dies, they will not respawn until the other snake dies. The player has 3 lives per game. Difficulty levels affect speed, obstacles, quantity of men & length of snake.
In H2H Instant Respawn 2P, the game is played in a two-player simultaneous mode. When a player dies, they will respawn immediately. The player has 3 lives per game. Difficulty levels affect speed, obstacles, quantity of men & length of snake.
To play Deadly Cobra, you need gcc 3.2.2, SDL 1.2.7, SDL_image 1.2.3 and SDL_mixer 1.2.5. The latest release of the game includes improvements such as implemented multiplayer support, fixed timing for move functions, lowered CPU usage from ~99% -> ~1%, new graphics, new music created exclusively for DC, revamped screen layout, and more diversity between difficulty levels. Additionally, the game now has a key to save a screen shot, increased score to 4 digits, and added sound effects, among other changes.
