DeLi Linux is a Linux operating system designed for older computers, ranging from 486 to Pentium MMX 166 or similar models.
The DeLi Linux project is packed with a plethora of useful software such as email clients, graphical web browsers, an office package with word processor and spreadsheet, and much more. The full install is extremely light on your hard drive, needing not more than 250 MB of space, including XFree and development tools.
So, why would DeLi Linux cater to such old computers, you may ask? Well, there are still many computers around with the configuration mentioned above, and it would be a shame to waste them. Many people simply cannot buy a 2 Ghz machine for 1000 $ or more, but they can buy a Pentium I 133 for 50 $ from eBay. Many people are still happy with the computer they bought five years ago. In the so-called third world, new hardware is not affordable, and so, DeLi Linux offers a great solution to this problem.
This distribution is perfect for computers that cannot handle newer versions of Windows, like Windows 95 or Windows 3.1. These versions are no longer supported by Microsoft, they are no longer in production, and there's very little software available for these old Windows versions.
One of the significant improvements in the latest release of DeLi Linux is the change in default encoding to UTF-8, which has improved compatibility with other systems. In addition, GTK1 was dropped in favour of GTK2, the pacman package manager is now used, and Netsurf and Skipstone are included as web browsers. The office applications were also updated, with Abiword 2.4.6 with the ODT plugin and Gnumeric 1.6.3. Overall, DeLi Linux offers a great solution to breathe new life into old machines, and it is an impressive choice for those looking to make their machines useful again.
