DirectNet is a messaging software that functions without a central server. It allows users to send instant messages without going through a third-party server.
This software solution was created primarily by Gregor Richards to empower users to communicate effectively, with the freedom to choose how they wish to connect to the network. To get started, all that is required is to know the hostname of a node on the network to connect to via the hub. The hub is not a server, but only a reference point to connect to the "main" DirectNet network. In the event that the hub goes down, the network remains fully operational. Thus, users can form local DirectNet networks and not associate themselves with the main DirectNet network, if they so choose.
Using DirectNet is easy - simply put in your name and GPG information and connect to hub.imdirect.net if accessing the network online, and connect to a known user's username in the find box, if that user is online. It is now possible to establish short-circuiting connections once and enjoy some other fresh additions like fixed data-loss bug and a practical segfault-on-quit in the FLTK frontend.
Overall, DirectNet is a powerful and flexible messaging solution that empowers users and enhances communication through its serverless design, offering a unique and effective approach to instant messaging.
