DirIndexFaker is a PHP tool that generates counterfeit Apache directory listings.
The script works by creating a honeypot or tarpit, which generates an abundance of false positives that make it difficult and expensive for copyright enforcers to distinguish infringers from innocent parties. While there are other RIAA/MPAA spider trapping scripts available, they often have unacceptable limitations, such as excessive server requirements or a strain on server resources.
DirIndexFaker addresses these issues by producing fake apache index pages with links to large files with copyrighted sounding names. The files are not actually stored on the server's disk, and the script does not require root access. Compared to other scripts like DMCA Bot Killer, DirIndexFaker is more efficient and error-free.
Installation is simple: extract the contents of the .zip file to a subfolder in your PHP-enabled webserver's document root, and place a link to that subfolder where bots can see it, but humans cannot. It is essential to keep the link visible to search engines since the RIAA is known to use them to find infringing content.
This latest release of DirIndexFaker features significant improvements such as the ability to slow down RIAA/MPAA bots with a usleep call, making it harder to detect as a fake. The random seed has also been changed to alter filenames and sizes only once a day. Additionally, the server info at the bottom row has been fixed to match the actual server version running on the host.
Overall, DirIndexFaker is a reliable, straightforward, and powerful tool for hindering the efforts of copyright enforcement organizations.
