Dlogin is a straightforward alternative to 'login'.
Firstly, it provides an easy way to grant users who log in "locally" (that is, via the virtual terminal) access to arbitrary Unix groups, defined by the administrator. The implication is that such users can perform actions like shutting down the system, accessing audio features, among others, without having to log in as root.
Secondly, with the virtual terminals on Linux in mind, the software enables users who have logged in on a local terminal to log in to another terminal without having to re-enter their username and password. Note that both functionalities come with security implications.
In the latest release, dlogin now supports PAM, among other minor tweaks. Given its targeted use case, this is an excellent piece of software recommended for home Linux users who want a simple login replacement.
