Dstat is a flexible alternative to vmstat, iostat, and ifstat - all of which measure system performance.
Dstat facilitates instantaneous access to all the resources of your system. You can use its features to compare disk usage vis-à-vis interrupts from your IDE controller or network bandwidth figures with disk throughput within the same interval. It provides the most detailed information in columns, and clearly indicates the displayed output's magnitude and unit. This reduces confusion and eliminates the possibility of errors.
Dstat is also the only tool that allows you to aggregate block device throughput for a given disk set or network bandwidth for specific interfaces. With Dstat, it is possible to view the throughput for all the block devices that make up a single storage system or filesystem. Furthermore, you can customize your output from /etc/dstat.conf, and also write your own Dstat modules to plug into its output.
Dstat is optimized for real-time interpretation by humans while providing unparalleled functionality. Additionally, the new CSV output feature enables you to save the output to a file that you can import later into Gnumeric or Excel to produce graphs. Overall, Dstat is an invaluable tool for any system administrator, with a broad range of features that make it indispensable for monitoring system resources.
