Dudders is a tool designed to update DNS records, offering a simple and streamlined solution for managing your domain's DNS settings with ease.
However, there are a few limitations to keep in mind. Although Dudders is an excellent tool for pointing a domain name to an IP address, it cannot perform all the functions DNS UPDATE can handle. Additionally, if a problem arises, Dudders will error and exit instead of dealing with the issue.
For users who require a general-purpose DNS UPDATE utility, ISC's nsupdate, which comes with BIND, is a good option. Other free clients with similar functionality include ddclient, ez-ipupdate, updatedd, ipupdate, and dnssec-tools's ifup-dyndns. You can refer to the ISC BIND 9 Administrator Reference Manual to learn more about configuring your zone's DNS server to support a SIG(0) update under the DNSSEC section.
To use Dudders, simply consult the manual page for instructions on how to invoke the program. Usage is as follows: dudders [-k KEYFILE] [-n KEYNAME] DOMAIN TTL ADDRESS, which signs a DNS UPDATE of DOMAIN to ADDRESS with KEYFILE.
This release of Dudders comes with several important updates. Firstly, the crypto plugins now no longer export unresolved symbols. Secondly, the authority can now be overridden with the -m and -z options: this adds more flexibility by circumventing the search for the master and zone using the local resolver. Thirdly, the manual page is now in section 8 and renamed accordingly. Finally, Dudder's private key parsing is more stringent; this helps to prevent some possible segfaults, such as attempting to use a dnssec-keygen .key file instead of the .private file.
