ExactAudio, formerly known as GSMP, aims to offer the same level of popularity and usefulness as The GIMP software does for graphic designing, but for sound processing.
The initial goal was to create an audio/sound equivalent of what GIMP achieved. However, the focus later shifted to creating a complete and open-source Virtual Studio environment for Linux that featured both MIDI and DSP/Audio capabilities and was open for other kinds of data.
Although time is mostly consumed with Embedded Linux solution development around the T2 SDE, ExactAudio continues to focus on a high-quality audio streaming library. The goal is to become a powerful framework to assemble applications from various components like mobile player, multitrack hd-recorder, midi-sequencer, synth and signal processors.
ExactAudio offers several key features, including non-destructive editing that allows all action on the audio data to be undone, so you can play around with the effects without modifying any bit of your original data file. It is also multi-threaded, allowing wave-plots and FX's to be generated in the background while the UI remains interactive.
The software uses 24/8 bit fixed-point arithmetic to allow overflows with no accuracy loss and 64-bit indexes to enable real-time takes even at 96kHz DVD quality. There is no limit to the track count, and ExactAudio supports multi-track recording as well. The software has been tested with the MIDIMAN Delta 1010 and recorded 10 channels with 2-8% CPU load on an Athlon 600Mhz.
Most effects can be pre-heard during playback, and the software supports MS-Wave, Ogg/Vorbis, and MP3 (experimental) import formats, with decompression done on-the-fly. At present, only Wave export format is supported.
Overall, ExactAudio is a reliable and efficient audio software that offers a range of features primarily focused on non-destructive editing, multi-threaded design, high-quality streaming, and real-time effect pre-hearing. Some of the effects available include fadings, graphical-eq, some IIR filters, compressor, noise-gate, de-click and reverb.
