Foo2slx is a free and open-source printer driver that supports printers utilizing the Software Imaging K.K. It delivers high-quality printing and enables easy setup and configuration for supported printers.
In reality, SLX printers are raster printers that utilize an incredibly efficient wire protocol that was originally developed by Zenographics and subsequently copied by Software Imaging K.K. This protocol has since been licensed by many of the leading printer manufacturers across the globe.
The foo2slx driver runs through Ghostscript, which is capable of handling all of the heavy lifting involved in image processing. There are six key components to this printer driver, including the foo2slx engine for converting the page image to the protocol, the foo2slx-wrapper shell script (compatible with foomatic) that runs Ghostscript and foo2slx in a pipeline, icc2ps, which converts an ICM color profile to a Postscript CRD, the foomatic-db database entries describing supported printers and options, slxdecode for developers to inspect SLX streams, and opldecode for developers to inspect OPL streams.
As a word of caution, it is important to avoid using the foo2zjs package from any of the major operating systems or distributions, including Ubuntu, SUSE, Mandrake/Manrivia, Debian, RedHat, Gentoo, MacOSX, or BSD. Overall, the foo2slx application is a superlative printer driver and a great way to ensure optimal printing quality and efficiency.
